Today, we join the world in celebrating International Women’s Day as we recognize and appreciate the achievement that women across the globe and in the Ethernity team accomplish every day. The theme this year is “Gender Equality Today for a Sustainable Tomorrow” and we spoke to a few of our amazing colleagues about what it means to them.

Noa Nowling

The theme for 2022’s International Women’s Day is “gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow,” what does this mean to you in your work life?

To me, and for Ethernity, it means empowering women within our community and our team to collaborate, speak up, lead and be active in a predominantly male space.

What barriers have you faced, as a woman, in becoming successful in your field? How did you overcome them?

The main barrier was looking for women who were knowledgeable and interested in crypto, NFT’s, and the Metaverse. But, over the past year this has changed dramatically and I’m grateful for the incredible women I work with daily that educate and inspire me.

Is your current role what you expected to be when you started in the workplace? How has it changed?

It’s a sort of happy twist of fate that I ended up working here, it only makes sense with 20/20 hindsight. NFTs and Crypto are still being invented under our feet and in the 1s and 0s behind our screens, and my engagement in the space has more nuance and potential than ever before. This nascent Web3 moment is huge- I don’t really reduce this to a job or a career, I am here to participate in the ongoing history of art and technology, and the revaluation of all we consider valuable. I guess you could say I am in it for the culture.

Based on your own experience, what advice would you give to women considering pursuing a career in your field?

There are simply more men in this space, no way of getting around that. You can approach that as a liability or an asset. Look for scenarios that encourage the latter.

The theme for 2022’s International Women’s Day is “gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow,” what does this mean to you in your work life?

To me this means that gender equality is not only here for women, but for everyone because it will make everything over all better. I think women bring a lot of solutions and critical thinking aspects to any work space as well as new ideas in general.

Based on your own experience, what advice would you give to women considering pursuing a career in your field?

All you have to do is put yourself out there and try. Since a lot of men work in crypto they’re all looking for smart and talented women because they know the benefit of including everyone, crypto is for everyone. Confidence is always the key to success, just like knowledge has been the key to power.

The theme for 2022’s International Women’s Day is “gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow,” what does this mean to you in your work life?

Well, according to Harvard studies, women in senior leadership
roles are more profitable, more socially responsible, and provide safer, higher-quality customer experiences. See here. To me, that’s an alarm bell to add more women into leadership roles for a more sustainable future!

Based on your own experience, what advice would you give to women considering pursuing a career in your field?

Just get started! No one is truly an expert. Anyone who tells you they have all
of the answers is full of it–run, quickly! Ask women and men to mentor you, even the busiest of folks have time to help individuals who are earnest and don’t waste their time. Nothing is more fulfilling than helping others grow.

The theme for 2022’s International Women’s Day is “gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow,” what does this mean to you in your work life?

Prejudice, discrimination and gender stereotypes are a reality that is not unrelated to the field of design and that hinders the development of the potential of creative women throughout the world. Countering this trend requires a conscious and constant creative effort. Designers are called to provide more inclusive and diverse innovative perspectives in our study and work spaces. It is our task to identify messages, environments and products that need to be transformed, to imagine, project and design a better reality for everyone.

Based on your own experience, what advice would you give to women considering pursuing a career in your field?

Have a lot of empathy. Look for good references. Be strict with the details but also experiment. Be open to constructive criticism. Trends change, be a sponge. Never get tired of studying, learning and working. Believe in yourself, it’s worth it!

The theme for 2022’s International Women’s Day is “gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow,” what does this mean to you in your work life?

Gender equality in my work life is about women having an opportunity to contribute to the development of society. Having women be a part of building something within this industry helps other women outside feel more welcome into the space. Representation assists in creating inclusivity and curiosity which ultimately leads to empowerment within the community.

Based on your own experience, what advice would you give to women considering pursuing a career in your field?

Network! Talk to friends, family, friendly strangers at coffee shops. More people know about it than you think and everyone is still learning everyday. This industry is changing daily, if not hourly. Educate yourself through twitter, instagram, podcasts, youtube and don’t be afraid to ask questions!!

What barriers have you faced, as a woman, in becoming successful in your field? How did you overcome them?

I graduated in 2020 from a historically women’s college, and am now working remotely in a male dominated field. This environmental shift led me to cultivate my own community of women, by following female role models on Twitter, joining diverse female led NFT projects, and promoting ambitious women. In addition, I have been trying to expand my crypto community by encouraging my friends to put a small amount of money into crypto currencies and NFTs so they can understand the process.

Based on your own experience, what advice would you give to women considering pursuing a career in your field?

Cultivate your own female relationships, take risks, and help other women succeed. Studies have found women are more financially risk averse as their financial risks are less likely to pay off. For example, only 2–3% of Venture Capital funding goes to female founders. While the financial barriers are daunting for any female entrepreneur, there are more and more people like myself and my network that will promote and fund female-led projects because we are more likely to relate to the problems female founders are trying to fix.

Is your current role what you expected to be when you started in the workplace? How has it changed?

I’ve always shown interest in leadership roles, and starting my career in Product Management at an early age was like riding a rollercoaster! At the very beginning there was so much to learn and many things to overcome as people are used to seeing ‘older male figures’ in these positions. Me and people around me soon realized that true success comes from hard work and determination, and your age has nothing to do with it. By the time, you get to know the product and customers better and you start running the process of decision making!

Based on your own experience, what advice would you give to women considering pursuing a career in your field?

Product Management is often considered to be the most important role within an organization, as it directly dictates what kind of product you are creating. Having women in these leadership roles is more than important in order for the products being built to represent our point of view! Don’t be afraid to raise your voice, question problems you identify, suggest solutions and advocate for your opinion! That is the only way to get a flavor of what is to a Product Manager on a daily basis!
